We've now reached the Vogelsang High Sierra Camp at Fletcher Lake. Yes, that is correct. Not the Vogelsang High Sierra Camp at Vogelsang Lake, the Vogelsang High Sierra Camp at Fletcher Lake. (Keep it straight, there is a quiz at the end). The High Sierra Camp closes in early September (this year on Sept 10) and was already broken down and the tent cabins put away. | ||
Here is a shot of the Bathroom that hasn't worked in more than five years. When they first closed the bathroom here, they used to schedule it for repairs the next year then cancel the repair due to "funding shortages." Over the years, they gave up lying about their intent to fix it and just say, "It’s closed" in their brochures and web material. The frame in front of the bathroom is what's left of the showers (also long since closed). This kind of thing always makes me sick when you consider you're taxed for these parks and they charge every car $20 to drive through. The amount of government waste boggles my mind. The concessions in the Valley are run by a private company that bids on the contract every so many years (basically that is nearly the entire Yosemite infrastructure with the exception of the fire department). So many groups donate money to maintain this or that in Yosemite it's insane. Just look around at various buildings or efforts going on in Yosemite. You'll see notes like "funded by donations from the left wing liberals of the Sierra Club so we can later claim we have the right to ban your entrance..." (John Muir spins so fast in is grave now, his plot always looks like it's just been rototilled) Many other groups with less of a sick political agenda also donate wads of dollars. So basically your genius federal government bureaucrats have the campgrounds (and they charge for those), roads, these high sierra camps, controlled burns, and ranger salaries to maintain. Yosemite averages 7000 cars/day with over 4 million visitors total per year. So, the $20 car charge nets them a whopping $51 million alone. Heaven only knows how much they make off the concession companies, couple that with your already mentioned tax dollars and you can see that maintaining one-ply toilet paper in a rotting, collapsing, shack in the campgrounds is really all you could possibly hope to do with what little you give them. (cough-spit). Please, can someone add a 2% income tax increase to the bastard rich people to fix this place? Oh ya, I forget, they'd just waste 4% more, what was I thinking... been there, tried that... End rant... |

Andra sits near one the tent cabin foundations. A bear storage locker is seen to the right. Storing bears in non-approved containers can get you fined, although I've never quite figured out how to get a bear into one of these things... |
