We reached the fee building at about 2:30pm. After settling up with the taxman we headed down the road towards the trailhead. There was a group of Roosevelt elk resting in the shade on and around the road. This group included several small calves. We carefully moved through the herd and tried not to startle them.
Here you can see two calves with one nursing from mom. We got within about 25ft as most of them failed to move as we walked through. The one you see sitting, never got up as we passed.
