The male never got more than about 50ft behind. You might wonder if there were biting flies around. I can personally tell you those things really hurt. I got bit twice!
Fortunately for us, the owners came in on new horses from the pack station and found us just before we reached Horse Meadow. I'm sure it was a huge relief for them. One thing still puzzles me though. They rode about 30 miles to reach us and then turned around and went out the same way. We were only about a mile from Horse Meadow and the shortest route would have been to continue along with us and fork up to Walker Lake, then Mosquito Pass, down to Sheep Camp and back to Lower Relief Valley. By my calculations, it should have been more than six miles shorter than turning back. Since we don't use pack animals, perhaps there are trails with stock animal restrictions.
