We are making our way around Gem Lake on our way out.

We've made our way past Agnew Lake and have begun the long exposed descent to the trailhead. Walking on granite in the sun is very hot and there are very few trees. We reached this big juniper tree and stopped in the shade to rehydrate Dawg. He is very proficient at drinking out of my camelbak tube. We normally carry 70oz (2 liter/half gallon) bladders in our packs. To accommodate Dawg's water needs, I'm carrying a 100oz (3/4 gallon) bladder in my pack. A gallon of water weighs 8.34 lbs, which means Dawg's water adds 2 lbs to my pack. Well worth it. I love that little monster!

We catch our breath before continuing our descent.
