Long Canyon Creek crossing. Dawg like all dogs can remove about 70% of the water on his fur in just 4 seconds. You can read all about the science behind it by clicking: Science: Dogs can shake 70% of the water from their fur in 4 seconds. |

When we reached the trail crossing toward Cascade Creek, we took our packs off and I carried Dawg's backpack across to get an idea of the river conditions. When I walked back, I talked over the situation with Andra. The river was running too fast and was too deep to make a safe crossing with our big packs. We decided it was wiser to camp on the east side of the river and day hike across with nothing. I'm a big guy, and the water on Andra would have approached her waist. Without a pack, I was having a difficult time not getting knocked over by the tremendous forces on my legs. The trail crossing just wasn't safe under the conditions of the wettest winter in recorded history. This video shows me after I went back across to retrieve the dog's backpack once we had decided not to attempt it with our massive packs. As I look through the water to place my feet, you can easily get vertigo and lose your balance watching the water rushing past you.
After showering and changing into clean clothes, I get my boots back on before gathering more firewood. Dawg naps on a pile of Andra's dirty clothes.
