Dawg is an excellent hiking companion. If he walks ahead, he stops and waits to make sure you are always in sight. If he is following behind, he is patient and will stay back there until he can comfortably pass you or you invite him to pass. If you stop for any reason, he returns to your position and waits to see what you will do next. He has been raised as a member of the pack, not the leader.
