This is Jackson Lake with the Teton Range in the back.
We've reached Yellowstone and after a good nights rest we began exploring the West Geyser Basin. This is a photograph of the Abyss Pool, one of the deepest hot springs in the park (53ft). The entire west thumb of the lake was created by a massive volcanic eruption. The crater that remained formed the west thumb. The west thumb is so huge, at first glance I was convinced I was seeing the entire lake. Little did I know I was seeing only one small section! I'm glad I wasn't here 150,000 years ago when this area lifted off into space... booooom.
This is Fishing Cone. During spring and early summer, lake levels rise from melting snow and cover the vent. When exposed, the temperature of the cone's water averages 199 degrees.
