The Waimea Canyon is a natural wonder for which there is no simple explanation. Often described as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific," it is neither as big or as old as its Arizona cousin, but it is unique. Nowhere in Hawaii will you encounter anything close to this geological wonder. The canyon is 10 miles long, 1 mile wide and more than 3,600 feet deep. Created from layers of lava flow, it changes color as clouds drift in and out of the gorge, sometimes disappearing entirely in the mist.
Kalalau Lookout
This is a look at the canyon from the top of Waipoo Falls. We hiked about an hour and a half to cross the canyon and reach the top of the falls. Unfortunately the stream (if you could call it that) feeding the falls was all but gone. I was impressed with the strange natural rock formations in the upper left of this photo.
