Driving up HWY 395, we stopped at Goose Lake. Goose Lake is very large and surrounded by farm land. Prior to reaching the lake we found some pretty candidate areas near Portola. From here on, the landscape was not very pretty.
Shortly after driving into Oregon, I pulled over to get a picture of the area. This dry treeless landscape is not high on our list of places to live.
Hundreds of miles behind us we've reached the Strawberry Mountains. This wagon landmark is off Highway 26 northeast of Prairie City. We stopped to stretch our legs and take a couple of photos. We weren't particularly interested in Oregon as a place to live and this particular area was certainly not our cup of tea. This route just happened to be a reasonable way to reach the areas in Idaho we wanted to see. The other advantage of this route is it drove us far enough north that we escaped the smoke of California. Although it was not practical to clear the smoke on our first day, we were looking forward to the clear skies in this area. |
