In the evening, we had quite a bit of excitement. It started with this huge SPLASH! We jumped from our chairs and walked out toward the lake. It was too dark to see anything but this huge V wake cutting across the lake in front of us. Some large animal had jumped in and was swimming across the lake, and veering our way. I turned on my headlamp to its brightest setting and shined it on the point of the V. The animal stopped and these two big glowing eyes turned our way. I tried to make out what kind of animal we were looking at but initially it was just too difficult. Then I spotted the two big ears and realized it was a deer. After starring at us for a bit, she turned and cut all the way across the lake away from us and hopped out on the other side. Shortly afterward a coyote started howling on that side of the lake. That prompted another coyote on our side to our south to start howing. They howled back and forth at each other for some time, but not long enough for your two guides to think about grabbing the camera. After they stopped, we realized we missed an opportunity. I had Andra put the camera in her lap in case they started again. The video above is a short howling session they engaged in a few minutes later. |
