The sun dips behind the local mountain range.
This is Summit Lake. Although the sun is below the mountains to my left, it is still shining up the valley you saw earlier containing Hoover Lakes.
A few more mountains shortly before losing the sun light. This was the only spot we camped where we were not permitted to have fires. As the temperatures dropped and the bugs came out, we made an early night of it. The next day's hike would be the longest of the trip at around 10 miles. The next morning I noticed a haze and the smell of smoke. As it turned out, a lightning strike started a fire near HWY 395 on the other side of Summit Pass. When we got out a week later, and drove down the highway to the Obsidian Dome, we were able to see the substantial burn area. |
