When we reach Piute Lake, Dawg is hot and immediately walks out into the lake to cool off. Now you know why his food is double bagged. His dog food is stored in a special (read expensive) scent proof ziplock bag, and then I put that bag into a gallon ziplock freezer bag. When he gets hot, he can plunge in without notice. If you are thinking we use scent proof bags to avoid bear problems, you'd be dead wrong. Scent proof bags are worthless against bears as you contaminate the outside of the bag every time you open it. The reason to use these bags, which we also use, is to prevent food from ruining the flavor of other foods. For instance, beef jerky will totally ruin the taste of your chocolate chip cookies if stored together in your bear canister. Any food that has a significant smell goes into a scent proof bag for isolation purposes. In the event I decide to store Dawg's food with ours, I don't want my food to taste like dog food. |

A look back at Piute Lake as we climb even higher toward Piute Pass. |
As we get closer to the top, I take a little break from the relentless climb. |
