We've reached a local high point with a view of the river. Many of the side streams I had difficulty crossing back in early June are not just crossable, many are gone entirely!

Dawg takes advantage of any shade, and every opportunity to put his pack weight down. When we stop for any reason, including to take pictures, he rests.

There is a long dry section before you start hitting creeks or are close enough to the river for Dawg to drink. I made a special effort to point out water sources that were off trail, and Dawg understands from all our day hiking that low valleys with green vegetation are likely to have water at the bottom. If he decided to go down to them, or if I pointed them out, we'd wait until he reached the water, had his fill, and returned. If you keep walking, he will abandon the attempt. He doesn't want to be left behind. So it is our responsibility to make sure he has unrushed opportunities to drink. After all, we are carrying water and can drink whenever we want. Fair is fair and dehydration kills.
